Conservatives Winning Green Belt Battle in Lydiate

Conservative Candidate for Park Ward Alex Orme pledges to stop developers building on Green Belt in Sefton East

Alex Orme pledged to readers of the Champion that he would not allow developers to use legal loopholes to build on Green Belt land. He said "We need to change our procedures for granting planning permissions so that inspectors cannot overrule a decision made by elected Councillors. It is simply undemocratic and open to abuse."
Lib Dems are sitting on the fence again due to fears that by Sefton not having a policy for building new houses, developers will be able to successfully appeal any planning rejection on this basis. This had occured in Nottingham, however at the time the Labour Government required local authorities to build certain quotas of new houses annually. The Coalition has since scrapped this requirement.
We successfully stopped the proposed marina going ahead with the help of local residents, we will need that help again in fighting future developments.

Lib Dems will not take the credit for Kenyons Lane traffic mess

The Lib Dems have pointed the finger at everyone but themselves for the overkill 'traffic calming' measures on Kenyons Lane in Lydiate.

Lib Dem Councillors have failed Lydiate residents again by going too far with their traffic calming measures. The decision to place these measures on Kenyons Lane was taken by Lib Dem Councillors on the Sefton East Area Committee. At the last meeting Cllr Fenton could be heard demanding that traffic islands be made even wider on another road they have needlessly targeted for their traffic calming measures.
What is most frustrating is that Tony Robertson has pointed the finger at Council officers rather than his own party who is responsible for it. This is yet another example of how Lib Dems contradict themselves. They agree that we need to make cuts on one hand but waste huge amounts of money on traffic islands no-body wants on the other.

Lib Dems Betray Voters

Liberal Democrat Councillors defy the will of residents to support Sainsbury's Eye Sore.

On Wednesday the 15th of September, a historical debate was held in Crosby Civic Hall by Sefton Planning Committee to decide on whether the deeply unpopular development proposal by Sainsbury's would go ahead in Crosby Village.
The atmosphere at the meeting was incredible, with residents packing the hall and balcony just to get a glimpse at this eventful meeting.
Residents, Conservative Councillors and Shop Keepers received a mass of applause and cheers from the crowd as they delivered passionate speeches and compelling evidence against the Sainsbury's proposal.
The Labour Chairman struggled to keep order and eventually caved-in to the mighty will of the vast number of local residents. They cheered on their representatives and booed the Sainsbury's representative who attempted to respond to each case made against their proposal.

Conservative Councillors Martyn Barber and Peter Papworth have long campaigned against this proposed development for some time and make specific objections to the size of the facility that Sainsbury's wish to build.
All parties are agreed that Crosby Village requires regeneration but this proposal was clearly unacceptable.

The Liberal Democrats have confused the public by sending out mixed messages over the Sainsbury's Development. Initially they produced a Focus leaflet claiming that they were against the so-called 'Crosbry's' development. They then suddenly changed their minds after the election and fully supported the proposals. On the night of the meeting many residents found their motives behind this move extremely questionable. Especially when pitted against such intense and emotional opposition, they still defied the people to vote in favour of the development. All with the exception of one; Lib Dem Councillor Jim Byrne who abstained. A signal of the Lib Dem retreat to their comfort zone sitting on the fence.
Luckily for residents, the Conservative Councillors' leadership on the issue had gained enough support from Labour to win the vote and reject the proposal.

This issue may not directly affect residents in Sefton East, but they should certainly be aware of the true nature of the Lib Dem Councillors who have clearly lost their democratic perspective on who they are supposed to represent.

Candidates Selected to Fight in the 2011 Local Elections

Local Candidates for Park, Molyneux and Sudell have been selected by the Sefton East Parishes Ward Committee

On Monday the 17th of May 2010, the Conservative Sefton East Parishes Committee convened to select the Conservative Party Candidates for Park, Molyneux and Sudell Wards in the 2011 local elections.

The following candidates were re-selected to fight in the 2011 elections:

Alex Orme: Park Ward
John Jarvis: Molyneux Ward
Wendy Moore: Sudell Ward

We would like to thank all those who voted for us in the recent elections and to assure them that we will fight even harder over the next year.
Although we did not win in the last election, our Candidates fought a strong campaign which nearly doubled our vote in the East Parishes.

We are fighting to represent you as your next local Councillors. We are campaigning for:

Lower Council Tax for Maghull and Lydiate residents who pay the highest rates in Sefton for poor services in comparision to the rest of Sefton.

Better local services and amenities for young people to reduce anti-social behaviour and to promote sport and community service.

Stronger penalties and strategies to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour as we feel Labour has made us too soft on crime.

The preservation of our green belt and rural areas from over-development.

An NHS walk-in centre for the East Parishes.

Unfortunately the general election resulted in Labour holding the Sefton Central Constituency with an MP from Kent who was parachuted into the constituency weeks before the election with no understanding of local issues.
This means that local people will have to rely more on local representatives who understand the issues that are important to them in their area.

As we now have a Conservative led Government, we would be happy to campaign directly to Conservative policy-makers for issues concerning you if you do not feel confident in your current MP.

We will fight all year-round for you.

Thank you for your support

Although we didn't manage to elect Debi as our MP for Sefton Central it was a hard fought campaign. There was less than 4000 votes between us and Labour. Also we didn't manage to return a Conservative Councillor in any of the east wards of Sudell, Molyneaux or Park.

However, the Conservatives are not going away. We were so encouraged by the amount of support we received in the east wards we are forming new working parties to demonstrate the commitment we have for the area.

A very big thank you to all of you who supported Debi, Wendy, Tom and Alex on May 6th. We now want to show you that the support you gave us is appreciated and we will be working to demonstrate that your confidence in us is justified.

The Economy - Lib Dem and Labour

The Economy - What are the others saying?

It's been striking that Labour and the Lib Dems have nothing positive to say on the economy. They have shown that they're more interested in personal attacks on the people who create hundreds of thousands of jobs than engaging with the arguments. Alistair Darling has been forced to admit that his plans will lead to what he calls "manageable" job losses, but he refuses to publish the Treasury's analysis of how many people would lose their jobs.

As well as having the right argument on the economy, we've also got the big idea for the future of our country. We believe that Labour's big government has failed, and that it's time to build the Big Society.

UK Border Agency criticised by its own staff

The UK Border Agency is badly managed, poorly motivated and getting worse, according to a staff survey

The UK Border Agency - responsible for securing Britain’s borders - is badly managed, poorly motivated and getting worse, according to a staff survey uncovered today.

"If the people whose job it is to control our borders don’t think the Government is doing a good job on immigration then why should the rest of us?", said Chris Grayling, the Shadow Home Secretary who was recently in East Wards of Sefton Central.

The results, from the 2009 Civil Service People Survey, show that:

Fewer than one in four staff think that the UK Border Agency (UKBA) is well managed. When asked whether the organisation was changing for the better, four out of five staff members disagreed.

Only half of employees say they have the tools and information ‘I need to do my job well.’ Most say that poor performers are allowed to get away with it, less than a third 'think management have a clear view of the future’, and only one in four say that they are sufficiently motivated to do their job.

As a final insult, only one in four say that they think the staff survey will make any difference to management at the Agency.

Net immigration has tripled under Labour, and it is estimated that there are now around 700,000 illegal immigrants hiding out in Britain.

The UKBA was set up by the Labour Government in 2008.

"The reality is that we have a Government that has presided over unsustainable levels of immigration and has completely failed to control our borders", Grayling added.

"A Conservative Government will introduce much tighter controls and will get net immigration back down to the levels of the 1990s – tens of thousands a year instead of the hundreds of thousands we’ve seen under Labour."
