Green Belt protection being deleted across the country by Labour Ministers
An investigation by Conservatives has revealed that the Green Belt is to be concreted over in almost 30 towns across England. This is due to new ‘Regional Spatial Strategies’ being imposed on local councils by the Government, each of which are explicitly signed off by Labour Ministers.
This is despite Gordon Brown promising the House of Commons that “we will continue robustly to protect the land designated as Green Belt”. Yet an analysis of each of the Regional Plans reveal how they are requiring councils to “review” the Green Belt and remove the Green Belt designation.
The eastern wards of Sefton Central cover Sudell, Molyneux and Park wards which all have a large rural element. Conservative Councillor Martyn Barber, Planning Committee Member and Sefton Central East Wards Committee member said:
“Labour Ministers are giving the green light to Green Belt destruction across the country. This is a shocking betrayal by Gordon Brown who pledged to protect the Green Belt ‘robustly.
“These top-down Whitehall plans will lead to unsustainable urban sprawl, extra congestion and higher carbon emissions, ruining many communities quality of life. This will only deliver the sink estates of the 21st Century, lacking proper infrastructure or environmental sustainability.
A future Conservative Government will scrap these regional plans, allowing local communities to protect their Green Belt and determine the appropriate level of new development for their area.”
GORDON BROWN’S PLEDGE
Gordon Brown claimed he would protect the Green Belt:
“I assure the House that we will continue robustly to protect the land designated as Green Belt” (Gordon Brown, Hansard, 11 July 2007, col. 1450).
“Green Belt land will stay as Green Belt land. Yes, we can give you an assurance that we will not build on Green Belt land. We are not proposing any changes to our very robust protection of the Green Belt” (10 Downing Street spokesman, PM Lobby Briefing, 10 July 2007).
“As the Prime Minister made clear in his statement of 11 July 2007, we will continue robustly to protect the land designated as Green Belt” (Iain Wright, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, DCLG, Hansard, 12 May 2008, col. 1393W).

Unlike the Labour party, we cannot rely on unions for financial support. Therefore we completely depend upon donations from ordinary people to support our campaign.
£8.50 would pay for printing and delivery of campaign leaflets to four streets.
£22 would cover the cost of calling over 250 undecided voters and talking them through our policies.
£47.50 could pay for over 15,000 online adverts about our campaign.
£175 means we could survey 500 voters and pay for postage on responses.
Please donate what you can and help us fight for the change we desparately need.
